Spears has written for the Daily Wildcat for nearly three years and Sports Illustrated Campus Rush for two years.

In 2014, he was hired to cover NBA Summer League and received a full-time beat writing position for the Arizona men's and women's golf team. In 2015, Spears became summer sports editor as well as the beat writer for football and columnist for men's basketball eventually evolving into a senior writer.

That same summer was when Sports Illustrated came knocking and Spears became a campus correspondent for SI Campus Rush producing social media content as well as out of the norm stories from Arizona football and hoops.
